This clever garden design at the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show won a Silver Medal by demonstrating how we can better use the spaces we share such as the many lane ways that run behind houses in inner Melbourne. All over Melbourne there are blue stone paved lane ways that were built for horse and carts to collect sewage from the rear of houses. Today most of these lane ways are used by few and collect rubbish that wash into the drains and are often a waste of space. What if we could realise the possibilities of these wasted spaces and turn them into something the community could enjoy. With the growing need for urban green space and the suspected future food shortage the little wasted space between your fence and the next could be a haven for a rambling garden full of herbs, perennials and the odd seasonal veg. Wouldn’t it be cool if over the back fence could be a secret garden that we all know about. The greener inbetween.
