Small yard becomes shady oasis

This inner suburban garden in Hawthorn had been left to disolve into a waste land after a small rear extension. With a rear garage on the cards it seemed the perfect opportunity to create a well designed garden space from a clean slate. The site had it’s logistical issues of height difference from the back door to the garage. This was to be intertwined into a small usable space with a mass tiered ever green hedging. Timber decking used to form the steps and a built in lounge, removing clutter and maximising space for play. Random bluestone paving was selected as a softer less structured material with a timeless elegance. Overhead pleached plane trees help to form a play on light, while a timber batten screen conceals the garage.
